Surfacing Installation

The surface is the safety system.

What it is

Why It Matters

It's the layer between a child and the ground — the most inspected element of any play space.

Systems We Install

We install the full range of commercial systems: poured-in-place rubber, bonded rubber, tiles, engineered wood fiber, and synthetic turf — each specified to the fall height of what's installed above it.

Sub-Base & Drainage

Most surfacing failures trace back to the sub-base and drainage, not the surface itself. We build what's underneath to the same standard as what you can see, and document it to ASTM F1292 and F1951.

How the surface goes in

  1. Site Assessment & Fall Height Review

We measure the critical fall height of your equipment, check existing drainage and grades, and confirm what the surface has to achieve before we recommend a system.

  2. System Selection

We walk you through the real trade-offs — upfront cost, lifespan, maintenance load, and accessibility — and specify the system that fits the site, not the one that's easiest to install.

  3. Sub-Base & Installation

Excavation, compacted stone base, drainage, and containment go in first. Then the surface — poured, bonded, laid, or filled to the depth the spec calls for.

  4. Verification & Documentation

We confirm depths and coverage, walk the accessible route with you, and hand off the documentation your inspector and your insurer will ask for.

Five systems. Honest guidance on which one fits.

There's no best surface — only the right one for your fall height, your traffic, your climate, and your maintenance budget.

Poured-in-Place Rubber (PIP)

A seamless two-layer system — cushion base plus wear coat — troweled on site. The most accessible option, the most design flexibility for colors and inlays, and the longest service life. Highest upfront cost.

Best for: flagship parks, schools, high-traffic sites, anywhere inclusive access is a priority.

Bonded Rubber

Shredded rubber bound with a binder and troweled in place, with a natural mulch-like texture. Unitary and accessible like PIP, at a lower cost, with a more organic look.

Best for: nature-themed play spaces, trails, and sites where budget sits between mulch and PIP.

Rubber Tiles

Pre-manufactured interlocking tiles in fixed thicknesses matched to fall height. Fast to install, and individual tiles can be swapped out instead of patching a whole area.

Best for: phased installs, rooftop and hard-deck applications, and sites that need easy spot repair.

Engineered Wood Fiber (EWF)

The most cost-effective compliant surface. Meets accessibility standards when installed and maintained at the correct depth — which means annual top-off and grooming, especially at swings and slide exits.

Best for: large use zones, tight capital budgets, and owners with a real maintenance plan.

Synthetic Turf

Engineered turf over a shock pad, delivering fall attenuation with a clean, year-round green surface and no loose fill to migrate.

Best for: play spaces, sports and fitness areas, shaded sites where grass won't grow — and dog parks.

Dog Park Surfacing

Dog parks fail at the surface first.

Grass in a dog park lasts one season. After that it's dirt, then mud, then a maintenance complaint every time it rains. Dog parks are their own surfacing problem — heavy concentrated traffic at gates and fence lines, constant digging pressure, and a cleaning requirement no playground surface is designed for.

We install pet-rated synthetic turf built for it: permeable backing that drains straight through instead of pooling, an antimicrobial-treated infill rated to resist odor, and a secured perimeter that won't lift when a determined dog goes after the edge. For sites that want a natural look or a lower budget, we install engineered wood fiber and decomposed granite as well — and we'll tell you upfront how each one holds up.

Dog park surfacing pairs with our full dog park build-out — double-gated entries, agility components, waste stations, shade, and seating.

Already Have Surfacing?

We fix what's failing, too.

Not every surfacing job is a new build. We patch PIP, re-coat worn wear layers, replace failed tile sections, re-level and top off wood fiber, and tear out and replace systems that have reached the end of their life. If your surface is failing inspection, cracking at the seams, or holding water, we'll assess it and tell you whether it's a repair or a replacement — including when the honest answer is that a repair won't hold.

Installed to ASTM F1292 impact attenuation and ASTM F1951 accessibility specifications, following CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook guidance for use zones.
